Pointscreen - CeBIT 2007

I'm sure you know the movie Minority Report and you'll remember the interface Tom Cruise uses to navigate in all the information he needs to build a story from the mind pictures.

The pointscreen is pretty close to that vision. You just stand in front of the glass or whatever material looks cool and move your hand. The movement is repeated on the screen. That way you move the mouse symbol
(the symbol no real mouse anymore) and the functions of the software.

The interface works with an electric field around your body that is able o capture 3D-movements and interpret them into computer actions. Cool. A bit slow but it's still new and improvements not that hard at all.

CeBIT 2007

MRC_cebit_2007.jpg
like every year I checked the term "Wearable" at the exhibitor list at CeBIT 2007. Conclusio: it has not really grown. I found only two companies (beside the fact that I know there are more in the future parc).

1) The Mobile Research Center

"The DemoCenter is a central component of MRC, where information and communication technologies from the field of Mobile and Wearable Computing are presented."
more here: mrc - Mobile Research Center: DemoCenter

2) FIS Fashion Innovation Service GmbH
Product spectrum is "Emerging Technologies - Smart Textiles, Smart Fabrics, Wearable Computing, Wearable Technology"

I will be there on monday whole day and visit for example Urban Tools and hope to find a nice sofa ;-).

Nanotech Battery

Energy is one of the main boundaries for wearable computing. The news just sounds to amazing to be true: battery power that is woven into textiles. In other words - I dream about cable-less energy for a long time now ;-)) Just read:

Enter the nanotechnological battery, the new lightweight and powerful engine of high-tech dreams, making everything possible from Ball's rope ascender to hybrid vehicles capable of getting 150 miles per gallon to battery-powered fabrics that will let soldiers plug electronic devices into their uniforms.

And read on: Nanotech will let us wear batteries and get 150 m.p.g. - USATODAY.com

Textile Light Dimmer

Pretty pretty cool stuff for your apartment. A textile light dimmer that allows very different and "warm" designs. It's Wearable Electronics in the meaning that your apartment starts to "wear" something what in the end means that it becomes more personality itself ;-) I like it, it's cool but practical too.

Bremen is it

Bremen_Wearable_Capital.jpg
You probably not know the wonderful German town Bremen? It's just one of the oldest Sea-side cities. However, because it has the lead in the wearIT@work project (a brand that should definitive be reworked...), you may call it "Capital of Wearable Computing" too ;-) And Bremen presents some great technologies @ CeBIT. Two example:

(English: Hot Wire is to test wearable computing applications for in- and ouput (like data gloves), PointScreen is to interact with a computer only with gestures. The next Wii interface if you want. btw, tonight I'm at the Wii Crip Berlin - drop me an e if you're there...)

Another good reason to come to the wonderful Munich in July, the most beautiful region in Germany:

The 1st WT congress "Where fashion meets technology" will be held parallel with the sports equipment and fashion trade fair ispo sport & style on July 8-10, 2007 in the International Congress Centre (ICM) Munich at the New Munich Trade Fair Centre.

And because the ISPO is there too you might wish to buy a new outfit for your winter sports?

.... on Applied Wearable Computing will be held in Tel Aviv, Israel on March 12-13, 2007.

And the really cool stuff happens on day 2 and it's all about interfaces:

-Evaluating Wearable User Interfaces: How to Simulate a Primary Manual Task?
- Next Generation In-game Message Interfaces
- A Glove-based Gesture Interface for Wearable Computing Applications

Shoe Weapon
I wonder why I have'nt noticed these shoes before.. However, Gizmag presents what they call the Cinderella Shoe that is in fact an electric weapon. The picture left shows how it works. If you want to see how great it looks just go to Gizmags picture gallery.

The shoe is a great example of how wearables may increase your self-confidence just by wearing it.

Cool Pictures

CeBIT 2007 - eFashion

Filed in archive Events by on March 04, 2007

CeBIT_2007.gif
Techwear is of course part of the CeBIT this year. Companies and products have their own area as part of the future parc. I even found a press release in the english section, but it was in German... Only these words:

Knowledge is the future in the Future Parc at CeBIT 2007

* eFashion trends in the smartTextile Village
* Teaching robots to speak
* Photos that organize themselves

However, the future parc is in pavilion 9 with about 250 exhibitors.

You'll find the smartTextile Village from the FIS Fashion Innovation Service GmbH in pavilion 9, stand C07und C10.

Other areas of interest within the future parc are: 'future talk' (communication forum, pavilion 9, stand A60) and 'future market' (products close to market, topic "living & working in 2020, pavilion 9, stand A66).

Btw, CeBIT 2007 is from 15 - 21 march.

Try your luck at CeBIT - Foreign Fairs 2006

Wearable Examples @ CNN

Filed in archive Market by on March 03, 2007

CNN Wearable Healthcare Fashion Military
Wearable was a topic at CNN and beside many known things we find a lot of new and interesting projects listed there.

Wearable computing also has a natural home in the world of gaming. Nintendo's Wii controller already has motion-sensors and it seems it won't be long before more interactive gear, including clothing, become part of a video-game player's wardrobe.
...
Intelligent clothing will remain a specialist item for the foreseeable future, but it has a number of different areas of application, including gaming, diaries and as personal assistants, Cliff Randell, Research Fellow at Bristol University told CNN.
...
Their Diabetes Management Assistant (DIMA) is a wearable computer system with wireless communication including a glucose meter, digital camera and pedometer.
...
Lynette Jones heads a team who are developing a vibrating vest that writes messages on its wearer's back.
...
"The main challenge is making security techniques lightweight, but apart from that people shouldn't be overly worried about security issues," said Randell.

All these examples show us that wearable means a new kind of relationship between you and your computer. "Augmented Personality" if you want.

Btw, the Quick Quote Question "Would you like to own a garment that acted as your own personal assistant?" was answered 62% with "yes".

How Japanese see the future - the "now future in front of us" to be proper. Watch this video short before you leave your office today and I wish you a great start into the weekend. Beside the fact that the presentation is very serious I still wonder about the name of the unit presented: "machine understanding"...

The Health PDA

Filed in archive Technology by on March 01, 2007

The really first contact with wearable computing for me was in Zurich, Switzerland when the Expert from the ETHZ presented his idea for a PHA - the Personal Health Assistant. Looks like we are a bit closer to that idea now:

In future, a smart sensor network will monitor sufferers and alert the doctor when necessary

Six Fraunhofer Institutes in Germany have spent two years working on a system that can record the main cardiovascular functions 24 hours a day over a long period of time, even away from the doctor's office, and enables communication with qualified medical staff.

The technology will be presented at the CeBIT, Fraunhofer, Hall 9, Stand B36.

Just stay on your sofa

CeBIT 2007 is coming closer and we see the first press releases. This one got my immediate attention; let's call it a pillow mobile. It's not the product itself, it's the following picture that grabbed me: You as a classic couch potato couching on whatever get a call. Your first idea is? Right, you're NOT keen to get up... Just stay where you are in the position you are and have your call.

And when you sleep the one on the other side of the line knows that the call is over. Thats easy ;-))
